On my latest visit to Warnham Nature Reserve, I was treated to one of those perfect summer days where wildlife activity seems to be everywhere you look. The reserve was alive with movement, colour, and sound – a reminder of why this location remains one of my favourite places to explore with my camera.Among the first highlights was the delicate beauty of a Common Blue butterfly, fluttering through the grasses, followed closely by the buzz of an Early Bumblebee moving tirelessly from flower to flower. In the shimmering air above the water, a magnificent Emperor Dragonfly made its presence known, its striking colours catching the sunlight as it patrolled its territory.
At the water’s edge, I paused to watch a Marsh Frog basking in the warmth, perfectly still yet full of character. The real moment of excitement came when I managed to capture a Moorhen sprinting across the surface of the water – a fleeting but unforgettable scene that shows just how full of surprises wildlife encounters can be.
The skies added to the spectacle with a pair of Tufted Ducks in flight – the contrasting male and female flying together in perfect sync. Not far away, a graceful Gadwall glided serenely across the water, adding a touch of calm to the otherwise busy day.
Warnham never disappoints. Each visit reveals something new, whether it’s an insect, bird, or amphibian, and the reserve continues to showcase nature at its very best. Days like this are a reminder of the importance of slowing down, looking closely, and letting wildlife set the pace.
